4. Run the Flush Cycle

  • Plug in the submersible pump. The vinegar will now circulate into the cold side, loop through the unit's copper or stainless steel heat exchanger, dissolve the scale, and exit out of the hot side back into the bucket.

While the general flushing mechanism is identical across the industry, Takagi and Rheem units have distinct design choices that require specialized attention during your annual checkup.

The Takagi Focus: Copper Longevity & Error Codes

Takagi is renowned for its heavy-duty, highly efficient copper heat exchangers. Because copper transfers heat incredibly well, it is also highly sensitive to thermal stress caused by scale buildup.

  • Look Out for Error Code 101 or 111: If you’ve neglected maintenance, a Takagi unit will often throw a 101 (Incomplete Combustion) or 111 (Ignition Failure) code. This often means scale is insulating the heat exchanger, causing overheating or poor airflow. If you see these codes, extend your flush time to 90 minutes.

  • Check the Air Intake Filter: Rheem units draw in a significant amount of combustion air. Pop off the front cover and locate the air filter screen (usually near the top or bottom blower fan). If it's clogged with dust or lint, your air-to-fuel ratio drops. Gently brush or vacuum it clean.

  • Error Code 11, 12, or 29: Rheem units utilize sensitive flame rods and condensation trays. A Code 29 indicates the condensate neutralizer is clogged or the heat exchanger is scaling up. Regular annual flushing prevents this completely.

  • Maintenance Notice Reset: Some modern Rheem units have a built-in alert that triggers every 500 hours of use to remind you to flush. Once your flush is complete, refer to your specific Rheem manual to reset the motherboard timer via the digital display buttons.


5. Rinsing and Re-Pressurizing the System

Once your hour-long flush is done, you need to completely rid the system of vinegar before turning the heat back on.

  • Turn off and remove the submersible pump from the bucket.

  • Disconnect the hose from the cold water purge port.

  • Keep the hose attached to the hot water purge port leading into the empty bucket.

  • Slowly open the main cold water inlet valve. Clean, fresh home water will rush through the unit and flush out the remaining vinegar through the hot purge port. Run this until the water smells completely neutral (about 2–3 minutes).

  • Close the hot purge port valve, remove the remaining hose, and securely cap off both purge ports.

  • Fully open both the main red and blue isolation valves.

  • Turn the gas line back on, plug the unit's electrical cord back in, and turn the power on.

Go to the nearest tap, turn on the hot water, and verify that the unit fires up smoothly and runs quietly.

Maximizing the Lifespan of Your Unit

If your home sits on a well or resides in a geographic region with notoriously hard water, performing this checklist just once a year might not cut it. You may need to flush the system every six months, or consider installing a dedicated scale-inhibitor system or water softener directly ahead of the tankless unit.
