RIDGID RP 251 Compact Press Tool: Complete Guide & All Kits

RIDGID RP 251 Compact Press Tool: Complete Guide & All Kits

The RIDGID RP 251 is the latest compact press tool in the RIDGID lineup — and the most significant upgrade to the Compact Press Tool family in years. It replaces both the RP 240 pistol-grip and RP 241 inline-grip with a single more versatile design that is roughly 30% lighter than the RP 241, adds a full 360° swivel head, and introduces Bluetooth tool tracking and remote locking through the free RIDGID Link app. Compatible with all RIDGID Compact Series jaws, rings, and actuators, the RP 251 covers copper, stainless steel, carbon steel, PEX, multilayer, and refrigeration press systems from a single tool. This guide covers every feature, every spec, and every kit configuration.

PlumbersCrib.com is an authorized RIDGID dealer carrying the full RP 251 lineup. Browse all RP 251 kits at PlumbersCrib.com or contact our team for help selecting the right configuration for your work.

What makes the RP 251 different

SlimGrip handle with forward-positioned trigger. The RP 251's inline ergonomic design with forward-positioned trigger and SlimGrip handle is built for one-handed operation — working overhead, in wall cavities, under sinks, and in the confined spaces where press connections actually happen. The reduced weight compared to previous RIDGID compact press tools directly reduces fatigue on high-volume rough-in days.

Endless 360° head swivel. The RP 251's head rotates a full 360° — not just a limited arc. Get into practically any angle on any fitting without repositioning yourself or the pipe. On a day of overhead press connections, this is the feature that matters most.

Brushless motor — 60,000+ press cycles, no scheduled maintenance. The high-efficiency brushless motor delivers over 60,000 press cycles without scheduled maintenance. Each press cycle takes approximately 3–4 seconds at 5,400 lbs (24 kN) of hydraulic ram output — enough force to make a clean, reliable press connection on every fitting in the RP 251's capacity range.

140 presses per charge. The 12V Advanced Lithium Ion battery delivers up to 140 presses per charge — enough for a full day of residential rough-in on most jobs without reaching for a second battery.

RIDGID Link app — Bluetooth tool management. Connect the RP 251 to the free RIDGID Link app on any iOS or Android device via Bluetooth (10m range) to view press cycle count, battery status, service interval, and tool information — and to remotely lock the tool for fleet management and jobsite security. The cycle counter and lock function are accessible wirelessly without touching the tool.

Color-coded LED status indicators. The upgraded LED light ring gives real-time tool diagnostics at a glance — no guessing what the tool is doing mid-press. A low battery condition shows yellow blinking; a depleted battery unable to complete a press shows red/yellow blinking. The bright LED work light also illuminates the fitting area in dark or confined work conditions.

Compatible with all RIDGID Compact Series jaws, rings, and actuators. If you already own jaws from an RP 240 or RP 241, they work on the RP 251 with no adapters. The 78178 Battery Kit No Jaws and 78188 Tool Only are specifically for this upgrade path — bring your existing Compact Series jaws and press on.

New out of the box — cycle counter note. The RP 251 is verified for proper operation at the factory before it ships. Because of this testing procedure, the cycle counter may show between 20 and 150 presses on a brand new tool straight out of the box. This is normal and expected — it is not a used tool.

What piping systems does the RP 251 press?

The RP 251 presses every major piping system used in residential and commercial plumbing — but you need the correct Compact Series jaws and matching sealing rings for each system. Using the wrong jaw on a fitting type will not produce a reliable press connection.

  • Copper and stainless steel — use ProPress Compact Series jaws up to 1-1/4"
  • Carbon steel (black iron) — use MegaPress Compact Series jaws up to 1"
  • PEX and multilayer — use PureFlow Compact Series jaws up to 1-1/2"
  • Copper refrigeration — use RLS Compact Series jaws up to 1-3/8"

Already own RP 240 or RP 241 jaws? The RP 251 is fully backward-compatible with all RIDGID Compact Series jaws, rings, and actuators. The 78178 Battery Kit No Jaws or 78188 Tool Only are the right choice — bring your existing attachments and you are pressing immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Will my existing RP 240 or RP 241 jaws work on the RP 251?
Yes — the RP 251 accepts all RIDGID Compact Series jaws, rings, and actuators with no adapters. If you are upgrading from an RP 240 or RP 241, the 78178 Battery Kit No Jaws or 78188 Tool Only are the cost-effective path.

Are RP 251 batteries compatible with other RIDGID tools?
The RP 251 uses the 12V Advanced Lithium Ion battery (catalog 55183) — compatible with other RIDGID plumbing press tools in the same family including the RP 340 and RP 350. These batteries are not interchangeable with RIDGID general power tool batteries. Verify compatibility by tool family and part number before purchasing additional batteries.

Why does my new RP 251 show press cycles out of the box?
The RP 251 is verified for proper operation at the factory before it ships. Because of this testing procedure, the cycle counter may show between 20 and 150 presses on a brand new tool. This is normal — it is not a used or returned tool.

What does a blinking yellow LED mean?
A yellow blinking LED indicates a low battery condition. When the battery is too depleted to complete a press, the blinking changes to red/yellow. A blinking red LED during a press can also indicate the jaw pin is not fully inserted. Cold batteries may also trigger LED warnings and prevent a press cycle.

What can I do with the RIDGID Link app?
Connect via Bluetooth (up to 10m) to view press cycle count, battery status, service interval, and tool information. You can also remotely lock the tool — useful for fleet management and preventing unauthorized use on the jobsite. The app is free on iOS and Android.

Do I need different jaws for different piping systems?
Yes — you must use the correct Compact Series jaws and matching sealing rings for each fitting type. ProPress jaws for copper and stainless, MegaPress jaws for carbon steel, PureFlow jaws for PEX with Viega rings, and RLS jaws for copper refrigeration. Using the wrong jaw on a fitting will not produce a reliable press connection.
