Run conduit sized for the heater's full load even if a smaller heater is specified initially — upgrading the heater later without re-running conduit saves significant future cost. All outdoor electrical work must meet local code for outdoor wet location installations.
Ventilation. A sauna requires controlled ventilation — fresh air intake near the floor and exhaust near the ceiling — to maintain comfortable oxygen levels during long sessions. The intake and exhaust should be positionable to control the rate of air exchange without creating cold drafts. Ventilation that cannot be adjusted by the occupant is a common design deficiency.
Drainage. A floor drain inside the sauna simplifies cleaning and is worth including even when not strictly required by code. Slope the floor toward the drain at a minimum of 1/8" per foot. Seasonal and climate considerations

In cold climates, the structure must handle snow loads, maintain warmth at extreme temperatures, and provide safe, clear access in winter conditions — including non-slip exterior surfaces and a covered entry or vestibule that prevents cold air from flooding the sauna when the door opens.
